Red Deer
(Cervus elaphus)

The Red Deer is the UK’s largest land mammal. An adult male, known as a stag, can reach a height of about four feet at the shoulder and can weigh as much as 200kg.

Most of the UK's red deer population resides in Scotland. There are smaller groups located throughout the rest of the country, with the highest concentrations in the Lake District, East Anglia, and the southwest of England. In many areas of England, Wales, and southern Scotland, red deer inhabit woodlands, but they also thrive on the open hills and moors of the Scottish Highlands and Northern England.
