Roe Deer
(Capreolus capreolus)
The Roe deer is one of the UK’s native deer species and is commonly found across woodland, farmland, and increasingly on the edges of urban areas. Small, agile, and solitary, Roe deer are well-adapted to a variety of environments
Roe deer are medium sized with no tail and are brown/red in colour depending on winter/summer coat. The males possess relatively short antlers, with typically three points per antler. Antler growth commences in Autumn following casting, with the velvet being shed in the spring.

Key Statistics
We often find that the density of other species of deer can have a real correlation with Roe deer density and distribution - for example, where Muntjac and Fallow are found at exceptionally high densities, Roe deer are at found at a lower density and found pushed to the peripheries of the best habitat.
As of May 2025, BH Wildlife Consultancy was counted over 22,500 Roe deer.
22,500 Roe deer have been counted throughout 4 countries, Scotland, England, Wales and Germany.
